Yealmpton and Totnes Show
Its official ... I'm on a diet. The worst thing is, it's not even my fault – all these tasty rewards for my hard work lately, it would be rude to say no! I attended a garden party recently as a guest of honour, they had the most fabulous food on offer; I stood in the summer house snacking most of the evening - I guess I'm paying the price now.
I have had another great month, this time at Yealmpton and Totnes Show - the hottest place to be for all showing animals, like myself. I spent the mornings in the pen, greeting many of my fans from Music of the Night. At Yealmpton, I had two acquaintances from EST with me - Pooh and Eeyore. We all shared a haynet in the pen, before we were called to the showing ring.
I was entering a class called "Best Versatile Donkey". First prize was to be awarded to the donkey who could handle any thing and any situation. As I walked through the field to the ring, I spied out my competition. I must admit, I started to feel a bit nervous. I was a lot older than the other competitors, although I had been showing for years, could they have the edge on me now?
My team made sure I was looking perfect with a few last minute fixings; one Groom applied hoof oil, while the other picked hay out of my mane that was left over from breakfast - oops!
Now it was time to go. The steward signalled for us to enter the ring, and we were all asked to stand in a line. The Judge looked very elegant, a lady in a long beige coat and pretty red hat. I went first - deep breath here we go. The first obstacle was to walk underneath a pretend washing line - piece of cake. The next, to stand on a scruffy mat - no problem! The last, to walk past an open umbrella - with ease! The Judge walked around watching how we reacted. I held my head up high, feeling very confident. RESULT! I was called in first place.
I won a lovely red rosette and a wooden clock as a trophy. Pooh won first place in "Best Family Donkey", and Eeyore came fourth in "Best Gelding". We were all so proud, and have very much enjoyed showing off back at EST.
Next time, hear my adventures opening the Summer Fair, with the Mayor of Ivybridge.
