Catching snowflakes

Happy New Year everyone. I’ve had such a good Christmas – Christmas at Ivybridge begins 1st December, and even then that’s only just enough time to fit everything in!

Each school class which regularly attend the centre has a Christmas Party, where the children (and teachers!) can have a turkey dinner, mince pies and crackers, and most importantly a visit to see Santa in his Grotto. This is where we play a starring role. A select few donkeys are given the honour of taking the children in the carriage, over to see Santa to receive their specially selected presents. My hard work throughout the year providing cart rides definitely paid off, as I was privileged enough to be chosen to help Santa.

There were 28 parties for 223 children throughout December. Each time I was called into the arena, the Grooms would kit me out in my Christmas outfit – I felt so proud in my red velvet robe and fluffy hat (with ear holes!). The cart was covered in tinsel and jingly bells, giant snowflakes hung from the roof and a great big Christmas tree filled one corner of the arena. It was such a joy to see and hear how excited the children were when visiting Santa. Santa himself would specially come over every day to each of the donkeys who helped to say thank you. Also, some of the children made us donkey hampers as a Christmas treat which included apples, carrots, mints and... my favourite... ginger nuts!!! These were very much enjoyed by everyone in the barn during the few weeks off we had – perfect to celebrate the start of the new year with!

Although I was extremely busy, I still managed to keep up my public appearances during November and December. I was asked to take part in the Chaplins store Grotto opening – that was fun. I took Santa in the carriage through Ridgeway shopping centre, followed by Laira Youth Band, children in fancy dress, fire engines, and not forgetting a giant Mother Goose and much more. I also led a group of carol singers through the streets of Plympton St Maurice to visit local residents – with Mary riding on my back. There were TV cameras there that night, and I later found out that I made an appearance on BBC Spotlight News! So, I’m finally making it into the world of TV. Next, Hollywood here I come...

January and February have been a chance to chill out – literally! It’s been freeeezing here, I’ve never known my coat to grow so thick and fluffy. Alison (volunteer), kindly gave me some coat-shine and conditioner for Christmas which has been well needed! Ivybridge has had a dusting of snow. All of the other donkeys cuddled into the field shelter whilst Pip and I went out to play – catching snow flakes on our tongues! I wonder how long it will last...

Bye for now x
