Emily - a little ray of sunshine

Emily Holder is five years old and has been riding at EST Leeds since January 2006. Emily has right sided hemiplegia (Cerebral Palsy) and faltering growth. Emily's Mum Helen has noticed many changes in Emily's development since she started riding donkeys. "We have seen huge physical benefits from Emily attending EST Leeds. When Emily began riding in 2006 she was unable to walk and co-ordinate her limbs. She is now able to walk independently and her co-ordination has improved greatly. Emily's confidence has grown enormously around animals and adults alike."

Riding Instructor Mandy Carr has also noticed a big change in Emily's abilities in riding and playing games in the purpose built riding arena. "Due to Cerebral Palsy, Emily is weaker on the right side of her body so has to be encouraged to use her right hand. Emily often has to be fed through a nasal tube because of faltering growth. Despite her difficulties Emily tries very hard to succeed and remains very cheerful and upbeat. She has become a confident and well balanced rider and loves the donkeys, especially Tinker!"

Emily took part in the riding demonstration at EST Leeds' Summer Fayre in July and still managed to smile despite the inclement weather!

Emily attends school in Boston Spa and now rides during the Thursday twilight session at Leeds. Her younger sister Alice (18 months) loves to ride too. Emily's Mum Helen can confirm just how much her children enjoy coming to EST Leeds - " The donkeys are a fantastic influence to the children and the staff are all very friendly and caring. Emily loves donkeys and has developed hugely both with her core body strength and her co-ordination, in addition to the social and emotional benefits riding therapy brings."
